Egg Carton Gardening

Maybe Spring is a bit fickle right now.  Maybe, after all these years, I’m still coming to grips with how the four seasons teasingly play out in the mid-Atlantic region.

April is just around the corner, and the days are finally long enough to count.  Winter may still be hanging on by a thread, but it is planting season in my mind.

And in our apartment.

While the balcony is large by our standards, we don’t have any plans for wide-scale urban farming out there.  We do, however, plan to grow a lot of herbs and maybe even a few tomatoes.  Yesterday was herb day – flat leaf parsley and rosemary to be exact – and the kid loved it.

Planting SeedsWhen we were finished planting we stuck the egg carton in Loren’s window, where we’ll likely check its progress on a daily (or hourly) basis until they are ready to transplant to a proper pot and the weather is warm enough for them to move outside.

Mor Mor stopped by on her way to work this morning just to say hi and drop off a few things.  As a Mycologist, she couldn’t be more proud of Loren’s interest in the subject.  Indeed, the kid Loooves Science.  And we’re happy to encourage it, especially if that means fresh ingredients for the kitchen throughout the summer.
